Hello Monday – May 4, 2020

Welcome to Hello Monday, the weekly, company-wide news show for the volunteer-run 501(c)3 nonprofit, Blue Legacy. We were founded in 1989 to empower underrepresented storytellers, bring light to the shadows, voice to the silence, and make storytelling accessible across all mediums.

Every Monday we share all the changes, announcements, casting calls, job openings and news for our four divisions: Blue Forge Films, Blue Forge Press, Blue Forge Gaming, and Blue Forge Records. You can find all episodes of Hello Monday at www.tiny.cc/hellomonday

If you are one of the 800+ artisans who work with us – an author, musician, game designer, filmmaker or actor – staying current with Hello Monday keeps you in the loop. And you don’t have to watch. You can just listen to the episode or you can read the transcript at www.tiny.cc/hellomondayblog

My name is Brianne DiMarco. I’m an editor, actor and author at Blue Forge and I’m also your host for today’s episode. My thanks to Faith DiMarco, the dedicated editor of Hello Monday as well as an actor, game designer and producer at Blue Forge.

How to Share Feast of Words Videos. For our social media focus this week, we’re going to spotlight sharing.

As all of you know, the digital Feast of Words event began last week and artisans have begun to send in their videos. Emails were sent to every single artisan of all four divisions telling them where to find the videos and asking them to share them to help spread the word.

It’s never too late to go back to the start of the videos and start sharing and supporting your fellow artisans. The Board is currently looking into whether to bar artisans from the Feast of Words who have not already shared the majority of existing Feast videos. We’ll update about that next Monday.

We’ll talk more in this episode about being an active artisan but for now let’s focus on how to share Feast of Words videos... and how not to share them. Because you want to share the videos in the way that Facebook or Instagram will show the video to the most people.

How to share on Facebook:

Open a web browser (like Explorer, Chrome or Safari) and go to www.tiny.cc/feastofwords

You’ll see a list of videos. Click one of the thumbnails. That will take you to that video.

Watch the video. If you want to support that artisan, click the word Share under the video. Then click the blue and white Facebook icon. A screen will pop up and you can write something nice about the artisan or about the company. Then click the blue and white Post button at the bottom of the screen.

If sharing Feast of Words videos on Facebook, please do not share the tiny.cc link because Facebook likes to block those from being seen and it stops the thumbnails from being displayed. We want the thumbnails to be displayed when people post because we try to capture images of our artisans being natural and authentic. We don’t want people to think Feast of Words is some corporate-driven effort.

To share on Instagram is more complicated:

Links aren’t clickable in Instagram and they can’t be selected or copy and pasted either. So the best way to share on Instagram is to do one of these two things:

Change the link in your bio to www.tiny.cc/feastofwords. Grab screen shots of a Feast of Words video, crop the screen grab into a square, and post the photo to your Instagram account telling your followers that the link to the entire Feast is in your bio.

Or...

Grab screen shots of a Feast of Words video, crop the screen grab into a square, and then use an app like Captions or software like PhotoShop or Paint to type the link www.tiny.cc/feastofwords on the image itself. Because the link is easy to memorize, people won’t need to copy it or click it. They can just look at it and then type it into a browser. If you use this method, you can keep your own website as the link in your bio.

Sharing video links anywhere else:

Open a web browser (like Explorer, Chrome or Safari) and go to www.tiny.cc/feastofwords

You’ll see a list of videos. Click one of the thumbnails. This will take you to that video.

Watch the video. If you want to support that artisan, click the word Share under the video. Then click the word Copy and your computer or mobile device will copy the video’s link into memory. Now go wherever you want – email, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. – and paste the link into a post by holding down the Crtl button and the V button at the same time, by clicking the right mouse or touchpad button and selecting Paste, or by pressing and holding to trigger the Paste option to pop up.

BlueFlix Cinema. In the last two months, Blue Legacy has adapted and partnered with new suppliers and services to continue to flourish and do business in the changing global market.

Starting this month and into the foreseeable future, we’re bringing our film premieres online but not at YouTube or Vimeo. We’ve launched BlueFlix Cinema. BlueFlix Cinema is an online screening website where only ticketed audience members can access the video and the after-party chat.

So now the public can access our free shows, web series and ultra short films at BlueFlix Lite at www.tiny.cc/blueflixlite

And they can rent or buy our premium films at BlueFlix at www.tiny.cc/blueflix

But once a month or more we’ll host a special online premiere with a Q&A afterward and socializing together at BlueFlix Cinema at www.tiny.cc/blueflixcinema

We’re growing to better serve our artisans and stay a healthy, strong company. Our first premiere at BlueFlix Cinema will be at 7pm PST on Saturday, May 30, 2020. We’ll share more information about it next Monday but save the date and time and join us!

Promoting a Film or Album in Feast of Words. No matter what type of product you want to promote for the digital Feast of Words, download the sample script at www.tiny.cc/feastofwordsscript

The script will give you a sample of what you should talk about and for how long. After you review the script, watch a few Feast of Words videos that are already up by going to www.tiny.cc/feastofwords

Your video should be about five minutes long and should follow the basic approach laid out in the sample script.

If you do not have inventory of your Blue Forge dvd, we’ll have an image pop up on the screen. If you film is already up at BlueFlix, direct people to buy the dvd or digital download at BlueFlix or rent the film online at BlueFlix. We’ll have the links pop up at the end of your video.

If you have inventory of your Blue Forge dvd (and you have envelopes to mail the dvd in and a mailbox to mail the package), tell people the cost for the product and shipping. We’ll then send you the money paid plus a postage paid shipping label to stick to the outside of the envelope or box you mail your inventory in. We’ll also create a dedicated payment link for whatever your price is.

If you do not have inventory of your album, we’ll have an image pop up on the screen. Direct watchers to Blue Forge Records where they can listen to samples from your album, and buy the album on cd or as a digital download. We’ll have the links pop up at the end of your video.

If you have inventory of your Blue Forge album (and you have envelopes to mail the album in and a mailbox to mail the package), tell people the cost for the product and shipping. Grants for Active Artisans. We’ve talked in two previous Hello Monday episodes about what it means to be an active artisan working with Blue Forge. It doesn’t take money. It takes a dedicate to the art you make with Blue Forge.

At the top of each month, every division is awarded a set budget for the month by the Board of Directors. The highest budget is allocated to the division with the highest ratio of active artisans.

This month that also means that marketing grants will be given to artisans who shared Feast of Words videos by artisans other than themselves, posted a comment on a Hello Monday video or blog, or engaged in active promotion on social media to support their Blue Forge work.

These marketing grants will be applied to any Feast of Words video that an active artisan turns in ensuring that their Feast of Words video receives 600 or more views. Congratulations, active artisans! All of you who were active in April will be reaping the rewards in May – for your personal efforts and for your division as a whole.

And remember: Monday doesn’t have to be a day you dread. Monday can be the first day in the best creative week of your life.
