Hello Monday – March 30, 2020
Welcome to Hello Monday, the weekly, company-wide news show for the volunteer-run 501(c)3 nonprofit, Blue Forge Group. We were founded in 1989 to empower underrepresented storytellers, bring light to the shadows, voice to the silence, and make storytelling accessible across all mediums.
Every Monday we share all the changes, announcements, casting calls, job openings and news for our four divisions: Blue Forge Films, Blue Forge Press, Blue Forge Gaming, and Blue Forge Records.
If you are one of the 800+ artisans who work with us – an author, musician, game designer, filmmaker or actor – keeping up with Hello Monday keeps you in the loop. And you don’t have to watch: You can just listen to the episode or you can read the transcript each Monday at www.tiny.cc/hellomondayblog
My name is Jennifer DiMarco and I’m a co-owner, author and director at Blue Forge. I’m also the host and editor for this episode to give Maxwell, Brianne and Faith an extra day to complete the assigned projects.

Writing Prompts. I wasn’t going to share this in Hello Monday but too many artisans have requested that I do. Since our quarantine began on March 18, we’ve been posting a friendly, daily video at www.tiny.cc/staysafecreate just to keep in touch. And I started including writing prompts in these videos on March 26. If you’d like to use one of the prompts – or all of them! – and write a story – or five – we’d love to have you join us. Blue Forge Press will publish all the stories later in the year in one big volume and every author will be paid a royalty. Stories should include the exact prompt somewhere in the story but that’s the only “rule.” Any genre. Any length. When a story is done, send it to email@example.com.

How Royalties are Paid. We work with more than 800 artisans – authors, filmmakers, game designers, musicians and actors – who are paid a percentage of revenue received. All royalties are paid via PayPal. Luckily, getting your own PayPal account is free and it’s also free to transfer money from your PayPal to your bank account.
There are two types of royalty payments. Single royalties and pooled royalties. A single royalty is when a musician creates an album or an author creates a book and they get a percentage of whatever money we are paid for that album or book.
Pooled royalties are when a team of people create a film or game, and the team is awarded a percentage of whatever money we receive and then that percentage is split equally between the team.
We pay royalties every single month. We report and pay a royalty on all revenue earned that month. Literally if an artisan is due one cent? We pay them that penny. We don’t withhold any revenue or set thresholds. As an author, I worked with that type of publisher and I didn’t like it. Your money is your money and no publisher has the right to sit on it.
This doesn’t mean there isn’t a delay. Our vendors and distributors pay us in 90 days. This means that if someone buys a book from a vendor or distributor in January, the vendor or distributor doesn’t pay us until April. But this is clearly marked on your royalty report.
What if you didn’t make any sales in a given month? Then you simply won’t hear from us. We used to send out “check in” emails to every artisans every single month until the majority of the artisans let us know, they would rather only get a royalty email from us when a payment was being made.
Have a question about royalties? Write directly to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.

How Do I Find My Book, Film, Game or Album? If don’t know where your film can be rented or purchased, or where people can buy your game, album, or book, please write to your division manager today for a full list of links and information. The email directory for all the divisions is in the description of this video.

Can I Resell My Book, Film, Game or Album? Understandably, a lot of people have been asking about making extra revenue. Can you resell your book, dvd, game or cd published by Blue Forge? Yes. All artisans have a clause in their contracts that allow them to purchase anything they create with us – which includes a film you appeared in – for 50% off the retail price plus shipping (no tax is charged). There is no minimum order but sometimes items are shipped all the way from the manufacturer in New York so please order three weeks or more ahead of time if you want inventory for an event. Once you have inventory, you can turn around and sell it at any price you wish and keep all revenue earned. Standard royalties are not paid on these orders.

That’s all the news for this week. If you have questions or would like us to cover something next Monday, please don’t hesitate to write to us at email@example.com or post a comment below. And remember: Monday doesn’t have to be a day you dread. Monday can be the first day in the best creative week of your life.
